What is taught and learned at IST Secondary?

IST secondary is an authorised Cambridge International Examination Centre and provides the International Cambridge Curriculum. In addition we are an authorised International Baccalaureate (IB) World School. Both high-quality programmes are recognized by world leading universities and other institutions for advanced education, as well as by industry and other organisations. To safeguard and improve our students’ learning and results we continuously review our curriculum to achieve both vertical and horizontal alignment.

The Cambridge International Curriculum (Year 7-11)

The students following the International Cambridge Curriculum are prepared for so-called Checkpoint tests and for the examinations of the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE). This is a full, continuous learning programme for students between the ages of 11 and 16. The programme consists of two blocks: Secondary 1 (years 7,8, 9), Secondary 2 (years 10 and 11).

Cambridge Secondary 1 develops learner skills and understanding in English, Mathematics, Science and other subjects for the first three years of secondary education. Special attention is given to developing general learning strategies and study skills and attitudes.

The Cambridge International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) curriculum aims to develop a learner’s knowledge, understanding and skills for a range of subjects, leading to an international qualification and providing an excellent preparation for progression to other academic programmes. At the end of year 9 students select their IGCSE subject choices. They do so based on their Checkpoint results, the advice of their teachers and the student’s personal career path. The careers counselor will communicate with parents during this process.

The IGCSE is a two-year examination course for students in years 10 and 11. It provides a curriculum and methods of assessment appropriate for a wide ability range and is examined at the end of year 11. The Cambridge University Syndicate administers the IGCSE with IST acting as an approved examination centre.

International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP1 and DP2)

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB DP) is for students who want to prepare for university. The full IB Diploma Programme takes two years, and is available to students who pass subjects in all six subject groups and the three core subjects. Parents communicate with the DP coordinator about IB DP related matters.
